A Cal AI alternative with free photo scans and a workout log
Flawless logs food by photo, nutrition label, voice and barcode, and logs your training set by set in the same app. The AI scan is free three times a day, ten a day in your first week, and barcode scanning has no limit. Cal AI’s own App Store listing says its food scanning results require a subscription.
We make Flawless, so read this with that in mind. Every claim about Cal AI links to Cal AI’s own pages or to its owner, MyFitnessPal, and every claim about Flawless was checked against the app itself.

Checked on 11 October 2026 on Cal AI’s own pages and its owner’s blog: App Store listing, calai.app, FAQ, MyFitnessPal blog and the NIH study abstract. “Not found” means we found nothing about it on the app’s own pages, not that the app can never do it. We leave out Cal AI’s prices: its store listings show many amounts without saying which plan each one is. All trademarks belong to their owners.
What Cal AI’s own pages say
The scan results are the paid part. Cal AI’s App Store listing says food scanning results require a subscription (App Store), and its website offers a 3-day free trial (calai.app). In Flawless the same kind of scan, of a plate, a nutrition label or a meal you describe, is free three times a day and ten times a day in your first week.
We found no set-by-set workout log. Cal AI says it “integrates with your favorite fitness products” so that you can track exercise too (calai.app), and its FAQ covers syncing steps from Apple Health and Google Fit (FAQ). A set-by-set gym log is not on its pages. Flawless has one, free, in the same app as your food.
It is an estimate, and Cal AI says so. Its FAQ calls it “about 80% accurate” (FAQ). In a preliminary NIH study presented in July 2026, which is not yet peer reviewed, Cal AI’s photo feature underestimated 102 measured meals by 345 kcal on average; the four apps in the study ranged from 252 to 345 kcal (abstract).
It belongs to MyFitnessPal. MyFitnessPal announced on 2 March 2026 that it had acquired Cal AI and that Cal AI “will continue operating as a standalone product” (MyFitnessPal blog).
What is free in Flawless
Flawless is a food diary and a workout log in one app for Android, iPhone and iPad, with apps for Apple Watch and Wear OS and a web app. Both logs are free, without ads.
Food, free
- Barcode scanning without limits and without AI: foods already in Flawless first, including ones other members added, then Open Food Facts. Every scanned product is saved to My Foods.
- Search across USDA, FatSecret, Open Food Facts and the community database, with results in the app’s language first.
- An AI scan of a plate photo, a nutrition label, or a meal you describe in words or by voice: 3 a day, 10 a day in your first week. All of them share one daily allowance.
- After a plate photo of a dish that is usually cooked in oil or served with a sauce, Flawless asks “Cooked in oil or with a sauce?” and adds a tablespoon or two of oil with one tap.
- Calories, protein, carbs, fat and fibre against your targets, and detailed vitamins and minerals for free.
- Copy a meal to another day once, or repeat it on the weekdays you choose.
Training, free
- A set-by-set log with 469 exercises, your own exercises and templates, and what you lifted last time next to every set.
- Rest timer (60, 90 or 120 seconds; shorter after warm-up sets, longer after a set close to failure), reps in reserve (RIR 0–4), supersets and a plate calculator.
- A next-weight suggestion on every exercise: add reps up to 12, then add weight and go back to 8.
- A strength rank on every exercise, from Bronze to Antimatter, adjusted for age and sex, plus a rank for each of nine muscle groups. You can compare ranks with the people you follow.
- A recovery map that shows how loaded each muscle group still is, and a step-by-step guide with the muscles worked for every exercise (see the exercise library).
What PRO adds
- An AI coach that reads the last 14 days of your food and workouts together, and can log a meal or start the planned workout for you. Health data only with a separate consent.
- AI workout plans and meal plans, 8 weekly training programmes, a weekly analysis, progress and nutrition reports.
- An adaptive calorie target, weekly sets per muscle, heart-rate zones for workouts, and a next-weight suggestion lowered on days you are not recovered.
- Up to 60 AI scans a day instead of 3.
PRO costs from €7.49 a month or €54.99 a year, as of October 2026. The price depends on your country and its tax, and Google Play and the App Store show the final price before you buy. The yearly plan starts with a 14-day free trial.
Photo counts are estimates
A photo shows what is on the plate, not everything that went into the pan. In the NIH study all four apps, MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, Cal AI and Appediet, missed about 30 g of fat per meal on average. The study did not test Flawless, and the Flawless scan is an estimate too.
What Flawless does about the fat it cannot see: after a plate photo, when the AI judges that the dish is usually fried, sautéed, roasted or stir-fried, or served with a sauce or dressing, Flawless asks whether it was cooked in oil or comes with a sauce. One tap adds a tablespoon or two of oil, 119 kcal and 13.5 g of fat each; “With sauce or dressing” asks the AI to add a typical portion, which counts as one more scan. We have not measured how much this improves the number, so we do not claim it does.
Barcode scanning is not an estimate from a picture: it looks the product up, and in Flawless it is free without a daily limit. The whole study and what to do about it: why AI photo calorie counts come out low.
Moving from Cal AI
- Flawless does not import Cal AI data. It imports workouts from Hevy and Strong and meal totals from MyFitnessPal.
- Your targets take a minute: enter your weight, height, age, activity and goal once and Flawless sets calories and macros from published formulas.
- Nothing changes in Cal AI when you install Flawless, so you can log in both for a week and decide.
When Cal AI is the better choice
If all you want is to point your phone at a plate and you are happy to pay for that, Cal AI is built around exactly that. It says your phone’s depth sensor calculates the food’s volume (calai.app), and since March 2026 it has MyFitnessPal behind it. Flawless is a young app with a small community.
If you also train, or want the scan without a subscription, try Flawless next to it for a week.

Questions
Is there a free alternative to Cal AI?
Yes. Flawless scans a plate photo, a nutrition label or a meal you describe for free three times a day, ten a day in your first week, scans barcodes without a limit and logs workouts set by set in the same app, without ads.
Is Cal AI free?
Cal AI is free to download and starts with a 3-day free trial; its App Store listing says food scanning results require a subscription (checked 11 October 2026).
Who owns Cal AI?
MyFitnessPal. It announced the acquisition on 2 March 2026 and says Cal AI continues as a standalone product.
How accurate is Cal AI?
Cal AI’s own FAQ says it is “about 80% accurate”. In a preliminary NIH study presented at NUTRITION 2026, not yet peer reviewed, Cal AI’s photo feature underestimated 102 measured meals by 345 kcal on average.
Does Cal AI track workouts?
We found no set-by-set workout log on Cal AI’s own pages; its FAQ covers syncing steps from Apple Health and Google Fit. Flawless logs workouts set by set in the same app as your food, for free.
Is the Flawless photo scan more accurate than Cal AI?
We don’t know: nobody has measured Flawless the way the NIH study measured Cal AI, and its scan is an estimate too. After a plate photo of a dish usually cooked with fat, Flawless asks about oil or sauce so you can add it.
